It has been used for the control of hypothyroidism, congenital hypothyroidism in infants, acquired hypothyroidism in children and juvenile myxoedema. Levothyroxine is deiodinated in peripheral tissues leading to formation of Tri-iodothyronine which may be the active tissue form of thyroid hormone. Levothyroxine should be introduced very gradually in patients aged more than 50 years and those patients with long standing hypothyroidism to avoid any sudden increase in metabolic demands.
