Amiloride is a potassium-sparing diuretic, which prevents the body from absorbing too much salt, and keeps the potassium level from dropping. Amiloride exerts its potassium-sparing effect by inhibiting sodium reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule and cortical collecting tubule. It is used to treat fluid retention (edema).
