يستخدم للإسهال الحاد المشتبه بالإصابة به، والناشئ عن البكتيريا في حالة عدم الاشتباه في الظواهر الغازية (الحالة العامة السيئة، الحمى، علامات التسمم للعدوى). العلاج لا يلغي النظام الغذائي والإماهة إذا كان من الضروري معالجة الجفاف بمحلول معالجة الجفاف عن طريق الفم أو عن طريق الوريد.
