Saxagliptin is an oral diabetes drug of the class of inhibitors of the dipeptidyl peptidase enzyme. Inhibition of this enzyme leads to an increase in the action and effect of the hormone incretin, which helps regulate glucose balance in the blood by increasing the production and secretion of insulin from pancreatic beta cells, and in return reducing the secretion of the hormone glucagon.
